Functional response profiling
Cancer treatment decisions are increasingly informed by clinical characteristics, pathology and molecular profiling. Ex vivo tumor testing adds another perspective: functional response.
Instead of looking only at what the tumor is, our assays measures how patient-derived tumor tissue responds when exposed to treatment. This provides additional information that can complement existing clinical and molecular evidence.

Near-clinical testing for impactful decision‑making
VitroScan’s ex vivo platform supports the development and clinical translation of innovative therapeutics through near clinical testing. By preserving tumor heterogeneity and the tumor microenvironment (TME), the platform enables modeling of patient-specific treatment responses. As a new approach methodology (NAM), it delivers insights that capture the real-world patient population. The platform’s predictive value helps to de-risk drug development, inform patient stratification for clinical trials, and helps to prevent late-stage failure of promising new therapies.
Clinical trial program
VitroScan’s clinical trial program brings our ex vivo micro‑tumor platform directly into the clinic. The trials integrate patient‑derived micro‑tumor assays alongside traditional clinical endpoints. Eligible participants undergo minimally invasive tissue collection, enabling the generation of individualized micro‑tumors that are screened against investigational therapeutics, standard‑of‑care therapies, and rational combination regimens.

VitroScan’s new laboratory is now operational, and we’re inviting collaborators in our trials to sending patient tumor samples for testing. Our goal is unchanged to provide drug response profiling to navigate treatment decisions. With our activities now together under one roof at Biopartner 2, on the Leiden Bio Science Park, we’re ready to support the next phase of clinical validation and collaborative research.

Treatment decisions are often made without a reliable way to predict an individual tumor’s response. In our new publication of a study with Erasmus MC and four other Dutch hospitals, we show that fresh tumor tissue can be tested ex vivo to predict clinical treatment responses.
